Description

What The Wheels Are All About

* Orlando Magic Wheels 1st place Tournament Champions 2017

The Orlando Magic Wheels (OMW) is a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) where physically challenged athletes compete in fast moving basketball tournament play. Athletes, primarily with lower limb disabilities that range from amputations to paraplegia, participate in this team sport using wheelchairs. We take our name from the local NBA team, the Orlando Magic, and wear similar uniforms.

The Orlando Magic Wheels currently fields a team for league competition within the structure of the NWBA and the Florida Wheelchair Basketball Conference (FWBC). Our team plays in the Developmental division (DIII) of the NWBA. We abide by NCAA rules as adapted for Wheelchair Basketball.

WE HAVE VALUES

Our Mission

To provide an opportunity for physically disabled athletes to compete in a team sport while in a wheelchair in a competitive environment.

Our Vision

To encourage and guide the development of physically disabled novice and experienced athletes to achieve their highest performance level while practicing good sportsmanship.

Our Principles

Team, family, sportsmanship, exercise, community involvement, and FUN!

Who Gets To Play

We've Come a Long Way

Anyone with a lower limb disability who is coordinated enough to push a wheelchair and hold a basketball is a candidate. If you are in good condition and exercise regularly, great! If not but you are ready to start exercising in a fun, team environment, come on out. Currently, the youngest member of the team is 16 and the oldest is 60+. The team currently does not have extra sport wheelchairs, but you can try one of ours if you come out to watch us practice. Bring your family and friends.

You've Got Questions...We've Got Answers

How can I join your team?

We practice every Tuesday night from 6 to 8 PM at the Silver Star Rec Center (2801 N. Apopka-Vineland Road, Orlando, FL 32818).  We invite you to come out and talk to the players and Coach to see if you would be interested in playing on our team.  We are always looking for new players!

Do I have to have my own sports wheelchair?

The team doesn’t supply sports wheelchairs.  If you come out to a practice we will try to match you with an experienced player for the purpose of trying their chair.  If you decide you would like to continue to play there are various ways to obtain a new or used sports wheelchair.  We can discuss these options.

Are there fees to play on the team?

We have to pay for exclusive use of our Practice Facility so we ask each player for $120/year.  You don’t have to pay that all at once and we will work with you on whatever you can afford.  That is the only monetary fee, but we do ask for help with fundraising for the team.

Do you provide transportation to games and practices?

No.  We generally car pool for away games (Tampa, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, etc.) and we try to hook up with players that live near enough to get rides to practices and home games.

How old do I need to be to play/participate?

Since there isn’t a Junior team in the Orlando area it’s best to be at minimum a HS student.  There is no upper age limit.  So as long as you are in reasonably good shape, have a lower limb disability, and a desire to play a competitive team sport we welcome you to come and play with us.

How can I support the team?

The Orlando Magic Wheels are a non-profit organization. Our 501c3 designation is Orlando Wheelchair Games, Inc. and tax deductible donations can be made thru the OWG.  Aside from monetary support (which we always need), when we have a Tournament we also need in-kind donations (bottled water, Gatorade, snacks, etc.).  If you would like to assist with fundraising, or helping out at a Tournament we are always looking for volunteers.  Finally we are accepting applications for Board members for the OWG.

Does the team do appearances/Exhibition games?

The short answer is yes.  We have done ½ time exhibition games at the Amway Center during Magic games.  We have also participated in various Disability Awareness events at a number of local Grade School, Middle School, HS, and Colleges.  These need to be scheduled in advance and we request a donation of $500 or at minimum enough to cover our travel expenses.  Contact us to get on our schedule and work out details.
