About
Northwest Wheelchair Tennis Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to wheelchair tennis athletes. With over 120 combined years experience in the adaptive sports world, our members work closely as a team through community outreach, mentoring newly injured and continued networking with regions throughout the NW.
Mission
Our mission is to further the development of wheelchair tennis. To promote an active lifestyle and supportive community for junior and adult wheelchair tennis players through recreational and competitive play with wheelchair tennis players, family and friends.
History
The Northwest Wheelchair Tennis Association, NWTA, was formed twenty five-years ago. We have a current 501(c)3 status as a tax-exempt organization. NWTA was originally formed as Oregon Wheelchair Tennis Association, OWTA, by Bob Pike who is one of the pioneers in wheelchair tennis and currently specializes in ADA law in Portland, Oregon.
2013 marks the 25th anniversary of the Pacific Northwest Sectional Championship wheelchair tennis tournament. We have hosted players from throughout the United States and around the world including Japan, France, Canada and Mexico. We are the only non-profit wheelchair tennis organization within the State of Oregon and Washington.
Recently, NWTA has taken steps to network with many businesses, foundations and like minded non-profits to further the development of wheelchair tennis. As the only non-profit focused on wheelchair tennis in our area, in the past two years we were involved in two exhibitions at local universities, Concordia University and George Fox University, promoting and educating the public. We also partnered with Oregon Paralyzed Veterans, Oregon Disability Sports, Shriners Hospital, Camp Attitude, and other organizations to promote wheelchair tennis throughout Oregon.
