ABOUT BOEC

Since 1976, Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC) has provided life changing outdoor learning experiences to people of all abilities, providing a sense of freedom to those who are routinely excluded from outdoor activity due to a disability or special need. Whether adaptive skiing in the Adaptive Ski and Snowboard Program at Breckenridge or Keystone ski resorts, paddling the West’s great rivers, or mastering the high ropes course, BOEC inspires people of all abilities to discover new places, learn new skills and rekindle their spirit in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

BOEC offers camps and retreats for individuals and custom group programs to anyone with any type of disability throughout the calendar year. Available for individual sign-up are a number of adaptive recreation camps, retreats and activities. Each of these camps and retreats are designed for specific needs, age and ability levels. The custom group programs are custom-designed, multi-day, overnight adaptive recreation experiences for groups and agencies that are tailored to the ability level of the participants. These programs include all meals, activity instruction, 24-hr. supervision, special equipment and on-course transportation. We offer both site-based & wilderness activities from rock climbing, canoeing, white water rafting, hiking, team initiatives, ropes course, Nordic skiing, outdoor skills, Leave No Trace environmental ethics and so much more.

BOEC’s programming can be separated out into four different categories; winter, summer, internships and volunteers. Within these categories, we conduct over 10,500 participant days annually, serving 2,800 individuals per year. BOEC also provides over $250,000 per year in scholarships for participants with financial needs.

BOEC evaluates the effectiveness of its programs on an ongoing basis by partnering with the US Department of Education and Colorado Department of Rehabilitative Services. Programs have shown significant positive impact on participants’ lives. BOEC also partners with equipment manufacturers in research and development for adaptive technology.

BOEC is a Colorado 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Through various special events and contributions from individuals, foundations, businesses and government agencies from around the country, BOEC is able to provide high quality programs that are affordable and accessible.

It is said that “Attitudes are the real disabilities.” BOEC endorses this view and welcomes all who are interested to become part of a very unique family. Simply contact us and we will find an educational experience that is perfect for you and your needs.

WHO WE ARE

THE MISSION OF BRECKENRIDGE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTER IS TO EXPAND THE POTENTIAL OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS THROUGH MEANINGFUL, EDUCATIONAL AND INSPIRING OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES.

Established in 1976, Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization, accredited by the Association of Experiential Education and the Professional Ski Instructors Association. BOEC is an active chapter of Move United and a promoter of Leave No Trace. BOEC is a certified and permitted operator on US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands and rivers.

Programs are offered throughout the year, including open enrollment courses for individuals and custom designed courses for groups, agencies and organizations. Activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the winter; and rock climbing, wilderness camping, rafting, canoeing, paddle boarding, adaptive cycling, high and low ropes courses and team initiatives in the summer.

Since 1976 BOEC has been proudly serving adults and children with a wide array of disabilities and special needs from throughout Colorado and the United States including 10 other countries. In a typical fiscal year we manage over 10,000 programming days in our Adaptive Ski & Snowboard, Wilderness, and Intern Programs for more than 2,700 individual participants.

The three main programs of BOEC are:

Adaptive Ski Program – Accessible downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding based out of Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain Ski Resorts.

Wilderness Program – Accessible whitewater rafting, canoeing, camping, backpacking, snowshoeing, ropes course, climbing wall and team initiatives. Offering multi-day camps at our 39-acre Breckenridge program site and also travel to scenic outdoor areas in Colorado and Utah.

Internship Program – A full immersion training program allowing individuals to get a unique hands-on experience working every aspect of a world-renowned adaptive outdoor therapeutic recreation, and sports non-profit.

The Wilderness Campus is a 39-acre parcel of land in Breckenridge at the base of Peak 9 in Summit County, Colorado. The campus features a sub-alpine lake, a modern lodge and cabin facilities, a ropes course and accessible trails.

BOEC provides nearly $260,000 per year in scholarships for participants in financial need. These funds are raised from generous individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies from around the country. In addition, general operating funds are raised through a series of special events and from a wide variety of donors to keep overall tuitions as low as possible.

BOEC’s greatest contributors and partners are Breckenridge Ski Resort, Keystone Ski Resort, Vail Resorts Epic Promise the Town of Breckenridge, Copper Mountain Ski Resort, Blue River Sports, and Mountain Wave. Without their support, the BOEC would not be possible.
