Launched in September 2021, the Realwheels Academy is the only training institution of its kind in Canada, offering three years of instruction in performance and creation to a cohort made entirely of artists who identify with disability - across the wide spectrum of its expression. Mermaibleism is the creative culmination of the Academy’s inaugural intake, a dynamic group of five emerging artists who have learned stagecraft, story, movement, and technique, ultimately bringing everything together for these three performances that mark the beginnings of their professional artistic careers.
With guidance from some of Vancouver’s strongest and most established performance makers, these five artists -- Emily Grace Brook, Jennifer Burgmann, Luna Jacobson, Aranka Boby Lukacs, and Cadence Rush Quibell – have devised a performance piece that’s entirely their own creation.
Mermaibleism draws on and subverts the mythos of the mermaid to explore themes of belonging, social expectation, complex care, and identity. It presents a highly theatrical investigation of disability experience: where those experiences intersect to create community – and where they do not.
