OVERVIEW: Free throw, the easiest show in basketball…or is it? A missed free throw can win or lose a basketball game. This fundraiser is not only a tool to be used to work on your free-throw skills, which of course is a vital part of any basketball player’s game, but is, at the same time, a tool to raise money to help the area Penobscot/Piscataquis/Hancock (PPH) Special Olympics. This is a voluntary participation fundraising event.
HOW IT WORKS: Each participating athlete/community member will collect pledges from people they know. These people will sign up to pay a flat fee OR a pledged fee, for each free-throw made in five minutes and/or 50 free throw attempts, whichever is completed first. Once the five minutes are complete and/or 50 free throws have been shot, and the number of made free throws is determined, the player will collect the pledge money from those who sponsored them.
ABOUT THE FUNDS RAISED: All monies raised will go to our local PPH Area Special Olympics program. PPH Area Special Olympics provides games to over 600 athletes that compete within the three counties and is run solely on volunteers and donations. We provide venues and equipment for events, pay for facility fees for various training opportunities, host social gatherings and cover the cost of many additional tasks behind the scenes to ensure safety and well-run events for athletes and coaches.
MAKING IT A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER:
Listed below are some things to maximize everyone’s effort:
➢ Where to Get Pledges: The Free-Throw-A-Thon is the easiest fundraiser ever. Free thrower’s participating in the event need to get pledges from people who they know for each free throw they make. ➢ Straight Donations Are Accepted: If someone would rather just give a straight money donation rather than make a per-free-throw pledge, that is ok too.
➢ How to Convince People to Pledge: Explain what Special Olympics means to you. Let them know the sports and events that you compete in.
➢ The Mechanics of How it Works: Once someone says they will make a pledge, fill out the appropriate information on the pledge sheet. You’ll need the donor’s name, phone number and email to advise them once the shooting has completed and the amount they owe. Once the Free-Throw-A-Thon is done, you’ll need to go back to all your pledge people and collect the money from your pledges for each free throw you made, then turn in the total pledge amount. If a pledge person wants to write a check, have them write the check out to ‘Penobscot Area Special Olympics’ and put the players name in the memo.
LET’S HAVE FUN!!!
