HSA operates as an independent training and certifying agency; and offers programs in conjunction with PADI, NAUI, SDI, and SSI. Handicapped Scuba Association’s program was developed at the University of California-Irvine and is recognized by the Council for National Cooperation in Aquatics (CNCA), Undersea Medical Society (UMS), and Our World Underwater (OWU) which together formed the basis for the Physical Performance Standards used today in the Multilevel Certification for Divers with Disabilities and Veteran Rehabilitation.

AQUANAUTS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS, under the direction of Executive Director Worth O’Brien, offers SCUBA lessons and courses. Individuals with disabilities, both physical and psychological challenges that might otherwise be discouraged from being active, are given the opportunity of diving. These classes are taught with the utmost attention to safety and consideration of the participant. The instruction techniques utilized have evolved over decades of accomplished teaching and research, resulting in a learning experience that is safer and fun! Multilevel student certification enables AQUANAUTS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS to train individuals with all types of disabilities, impairments, or challenges. Participation of such aquatic activities has resulted in stronger social activity interaction, physical rehabilitation, and positive life changing attitudes.

AQUANAUTS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS volunteer staff are trained as Buddy Disability Trained Divers. Buddy Disability Training (BDT) is a 30-hour curriculum in Medical and Empathy Training. Course curriculum consists of Medical Training in cognitive disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; physical disabilities such as Amputations, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Diabetes Mellitus, Hearing-Impaired, Sight-Impaired, and Spinal Cord Injuries. Course curriculum consists of Empathy Training in which simulating disability types while performing typically problematic exercises helps participants develop the skills and sensitivity needed to assist divers with disabilities. Buddy Divers learn new methods of communication such as tactile and sign language while simulating Blindness, Paraplegia, and Quadriplegia. This training empowers our all-volunteer Staff to be prepared and confident to assist the needs of our communities’ disabled and disabled organizations in SCUBA.

AQUANAUTS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS requests your support in assisting, facilitating, providing, and sponsoring our communities Disabled and Veteran divers through this project. Courses, activities, and events are conducted monthly.
